Iliamna Landfill

The ILIAMNA LANDFILL’s Hazardous Waste Disposal Program (HWDP) gives households and small businesses the opportunity to properly dispose of hazardous wastes and chemicals. Improper disposal can contaminate water supplies, cause explosions and/or fires, and poses a serious threat to waste collection workers. Hazardous Waste Collection Days (HWCD) are scheduled throughout the year at the Iliamna Village Landfill.

Pre-Register for Services:

Commercial disposers are required to pre-register with Iliamna Landfill Waste Management Department one week prior to a scheduled disposal date regardless of disposal amount.

Households with more than 55 gallons (equivalent to one drum) of waste must also pre-register with Iliamna Landfill Waste Management Department. The homeowner/generator of the waste shall not deliver waste from other homeowners unless the total volume of all the waste being delivered is less than 55 gallons. If the 55-gallon amount is exceeded, approval from Iliamna Landfill Waste Management Department must be obtained prior to disposal and documentation must be provided at the time of disposal stating waste type and each generator's name and phone number. There is a 3 drum limit per household per year.

Fees

Commercial disposers are charged a fee (see schedule below) with credit card processing fee’s applicable. Payment is required at the time of disposal unless other arrangements are made with Iliamna Landfill Waste Management Department prior to disposal.

Households are FREE.

Come to our event

WHAT IS HAZARDOUS WASTE?

Hazardous wastes are wastes that, in sufficient quantities and concentrations, pose a threat to human life/health, or the environment when improperly stored, transported, treated, or disposed.

Wastes are designated “hazardous” if they contain any of the following characteristics:

IGNITABLE:     Combustible under certain conditions

CORROSIVE:   Highly acidic, basic and/or capable of corroding metal

TOXIC:              Harmful or fatal when ingested or absorbed

REACTIVE:       Unstable under normal conditions and capable of creating explosions and/or toxic fumes, gases and vapors when mixed with water

REDUCTION STRATEGY FOR HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

By reducing the use of the following products, it may keep your home safer as well as save Borough taxpayer dollars for the cost of handling and transporting these items to Anchorage. The suggestions may make it more convenient for you to dispose of these items with your regular landfill deliveries thus avoiding additional trips to the landfill on designated Hazardous Waste Collection Days (HWCD).

Aerosols: Purchase products in pump containers, roll-on’s, or in bulk and pour into a spray container.

Antifreeze: Buy or ask your mechanic to use re-refined oil and safer propylene glycol anti- freeze. Look for the API Certification seal. Only accepted on HWCD.

Batteries: Dry & wet alkaline, Ni-Cd, lead-acid and lithium batteries. Use rechargeable or long

-lasting batteries when possible.

Fluorescent Bulbs: Replace with LED lights which are longer life, low-output bulbs.

Latex Paint: Buy only what you need. Look for “Low-Voc” paints.

Mercury Thermometers and Thermostats: Replace your mercury thermometers with a non- mercury thermometer or electronic programmable one.

Oil Based Paint: If possible, purchase water based paint. If not, buy only the quantity you need for the square footage to be covered.

Used Motor Oil: Only uncontaminated oil is accepted daily at specified sites. DO NOT mix with other substances. Used motor oil combined with other substances must be disposed on a HWCD.
